23rd June 2011
Hello again,
Well I am pleased to say that we have been quite busy for the last few weeks. Lots of German visitors who have seen us in the Merian Guide to Cornwall.
The roses have been wonderful, I think they must have enjoyed the warm dry Spring.
We have a chaffinch nesting right next to the front door, and I have worried every time someone has gone out or come in, but they have hatched their eggs, not fazed by the dogs or cat!
We have managed to make some big bale silage, but have been very upset by a T.B. reactor, so will be one less cow soon. She was in a group of cattle next to a herd of Alpacas, one of which
died of T.B. The whole T.B. situation is ridiculous, and we, as farmers are between the politicians and the public, not a comfortable place.
Until the next time,
11th May 2011
I know I go on about the flowers but the bluebells are beautiful, my daughter had them in her wedding bouquet last year, so they must be a bit earlier this year, because
that was in early June. Both dogs have passed their Pets as Therapy test, but I can’t visit any homes or hospitals because, whilst out with them and my family, I stepped into
a pothole and broke my ankle! I found the crutches very difficult, it’s a pity you don’t have warning of these accidents because a little practise would have helped
enormously!! So breakfast takes a bit longer at the moment! We have had some very much needed rain, and my son is not quite as worried as he was about the crop yield come harvest time.
Until the next time,
25th March 2011
Today, on the pond were two Canada Geese, a mallard drake and a heron. The geese have now flown, honking so loudly that the dogs stopped in their tracks. The heron
is late this year, as a lot of frogs have spawned and they seem to be his delicacy. The lent lilies and primroses are nearly in full bloom and soon the trees will be
bursting into life, the camellias are wonderful!
Some of the Aberdeen Angus cattle are out in the fields, kicking their heels in the air with delight and stretching out in the sun, perhaps we’ll have a sunny summer,
but the forecast is a bit colder for the weekend! Oh dear what would the English do without the weather to discuss!
Until the next time,
12th January 2011
Well it’s not only in UK that the weather has been a trial, let’s hope that soon we all will experience normal weather. We still had snow at Christmas,
the dogs and granddaughters had a wonderful time but I spent most of the time trying to stay upright, due to the ice that is! The birds became even more plentiful
at the feeders and on the ground. The blackbirds and robins would really tell me if I hadn’t served breakfast on time, when it was really cold I fed them 4
times a day. It’s just as well that my guests are not so demanding!
And now marmalade making looms large and so I have stocked up on sugar, lemons, limes and ginger so I can ring the changes in the summer. Now the first bulbs are
pushing through, and I look forward so much to the crocuses that we planted showing their colours, that’s assuming the squirrels and mice haven’t eaten them.
Until the next time,
5th November 2010
Autumn has brought some wonderful colours this year ,equal to those in New Hampshire where I have just visited, and experienced American bed and breakfast
hospitality, very much the same as the UK, but pancakes for breakfast, and no tea pots! My American family made me very welcome, and I managed to do some art
galleries and museums, one of which was the Holocaust; man’s inhumanity to man, which is still happening.
Still, back to Lesquite, I now have 1000 mixed colour crocus bulbs to plant and roses to prune. Next week our 2 Labradors are having an interview for Pets as
Therapy dogs, so next time I may have some more news.......
Until the next time,
17th October 2010
As the quiet season approaches there is inevitably refurbishment to be done, painting and decorating is second nature to us all. In some ways I have been
fortunate because a very serious house fire nearly two years ago meant that the whole house was burnt or smoke damaged and was completely redecorated.
But this year I shall have to do some smartening up again. I do wonder about doing a special offer, 4 nights for the price of 3 or 3 nights for the price
of 2, to help pay for the paint etc. Any takers out there?
Until the next time,
1st October 2010
We have a cat and 2 labradors and every time new guests arrive I am always a little concerned that people will be alarmed at their welcome. The cat is a
little more circumspect than the dogs who are desperate to show them to the front door. So far they have caused no problems and indeed we have had 2 parcels
this year one from Switzerland and one from Germany, with doggie treats and special cat snacks AND some chocolate for us so I think their welcome is enjoyed
just like our treats!
Until the next time,
16th September 2010
Lots of blackberries and apples so I should be busy picking and preserving, but thankfully we are still busy with the b and b so bramble jelly is a wish
at the moment. The swallows have been gathering on the telephone wires ready for their lengthy autumnal flight, I counted 102 on one day last week, the most
I have ever seen, and yet there are still some youngsters in the nests, so I fear these will not be mature enough to fly south. I think I heard on BBC radio
4 that swallows have recently been known to stay the winter here, so maybe they’ll come to no harm.
Until the next time,
26th August 2010
For the first time in several weeks we have had more English people than German in the breakfast room. It is such a help when taking breakfast orders.
I have lost count of the times I have demonstrated (to our foreign guests) the action of scrambled eggs, or pretended to take the top off a boiled egg,
to make sure that I have understood, but it always produces a giggle which helps us all!
Until the next time,
16th August 2010
I didn’t make as much strawberry jam as usual this year, time was at a premium and I was finding difficult to find good quality fruit. However
something must have been right because one of our weekend guests said that she had judged jams and that MY strawberry would have won a prize for its
colour, flavour and texture. She came with her two very well behaved sons one of whom wrote in the guest’s book, “the wet room was so good
I had 4 showers in two days!”. So we must be doing something right! Until the next time,
